There is a flood of new academic journal articles about Artificial Intelligence chatbots apparently resulting form the November 2022 introduction of the OpenAI ChatGPT application. Creators are introducing new courses and guides explaining their best methods to prompt ChatGPT to obtain useful results.

A recently-introduced training guide is Chat Guide Institute, produced by Professor Stephen Atlas. This is free. Educators (and students) might find this useful. I do.

ChatGpt suggested learning goals for a future student course trip to singapore

I used ChatGPT recently. I needed to write a set of possible student learning goals for a future three-credit (45 contact hour) study abroad trip to Singapore from the USA. The summer session trip would be three or four weeks.

The course subject has not been selected yet, so my chatGPT request was open-ended. My objective was to develop potential student learning outcomes that I could blend with the course-specific learning outcomes. I specifically wanted to include experiential learning activities that exposed the students from the university in the USA to the cultures in Singapore in meaningful ways. I'll be exploring this aspect as I continue to work on the course.

This is what ChatGPT gave me. This is a good start. I will review these in the context of Bloom's Taxonomy, and then decide which are suitable once I know the subject of the course, editing them as needed.

On completing this summer course, students will be able to:
· Synthesize learning from academic coursework, site visits, and cultural immersion activities to reflect on personal and professional growth and articulate the value of study abroad experiences for career development and global citizenship.
· Develop cross-cultural competence and communication skills through interactions with residents, business professionals, and other members of the Singaporean community.

OpenAI published a web page describing its views on how AI (i.e., ChatGPT) should BEHAVE.

Opening paragraphs:
OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) [1] benefits all of humanity. We therefore think a lot about the behavior of AI systems we build in the run-up to AGI, and the way in which that behavior is determined.

Since our launch of ChatGPT, users have shared outputs that they consider politically biased, offensive, or otherwise objectionable. In many cases, we think that the concerns raised have been valid and have uncovered real limitations of our systems which we want to address. We’ve also seen a few misconceptions about how our systems and policies work together to shape the outputs you get from ChatGPT.

Below, we summarize:

How ChatGPT’s behavior is shaped;

How we plan to improve ChatGPT’s default behavior;

Our intent to allow more system customization; and

A Microsoft ChatGPT and Google Bard thought experiment

A thought experiment.

The premise:
1. Microsoft is integrating the ChatGPT chatbot AI into its Bing search engine.
2. Google is integrating the Bard chatbot AI into its Google search engine.
3. Both AI tools can receive complex conversational prompts and provide detailed and sophisticated responses that look like they were written by a human.
4. Both tools will be able to access current Internet data along with the data on which they were trained.

The experiment:
A. Set up two computers that can share their web content with each other. Both computers are online with high bandwidth connections to the Internet.
B. Open Microsoft Bing with ChatGPT on one computer, and Google with Bard on the other computer.
C. Provide prompts to each computer so that one initiates a request for a response from the other, and then let them "talk" to one another.
D. Be sure the initial prompt results in the two computers communicating with one another in the way that we do now when we are using or experimenting with ChatGPT.

How long will they go on?

Will their content be added back into the dataset of the Internet?

If not, can their content be posted concurrently with the "conversation" between the two computers to a blog, so that the two computers can "see" each other's responses.

I am hoping someone with more technical skills (and computers) than I have will try something along these lines.

Singapore government may adopt Chatgpt through Microsoft's azure service

I teach for the University at Buffalo (UB) in Singapore. The UB Director in Singapore and I have been tracking ChatGPT to determine how it will affect teaching at that program. We have roughly 1,500 students in seven degree programs in Singapore.

This week, the Director of our UB program sent the link to this article Singapore's main newspaper, The Straits Times. If this plays out as written, then it indicates a wholehearted acceptance of ChatGPT. A week ago, the Minister of Education in Singapore announced his support for use of ChatGPT along with teaching how to use it effectively and ethically.

This is one paragraph from the article: "The project has also struck an agreement with Azure OpenAI to ensure that data handled by the Government is kept confidential and out of sight to Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft runs the cloud-based Azure platform, which hosts OpenAI as part of its investment in the San Francisco-based AI research firm that found fame with the rise of ChatGPT, or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer."
