"How Facebook Stole Your Psychological Profile"

This is an article from Psychology Today, by Susan Krauss Whitbourne Ph.D. Here is the opening paragraph:

"As revelations continue to unfold in the latest
Facebook scandal,  we now know that millions of its users have unwittingly participated in research revealing details about their friends, their shopping habits, and their psychological profile, otherwise known as “psychographics,” or profiling of personality."

This issue is one of a few reasons I have left Facebook. Their networking tools are wonderful -- I had 2,200 Friends. But their psychological profiling, and their selling or sharing of those profiles, began to bother me to the point that I felt it necessary to give up the benefits for a little more control.

Could someone with the right expertise and software profile me by going through my personal website? Yep. But I have somewhat more control here, and I can monitor myself as well.

It is more work to share things here, so I'll have to be more thoughtful. Yet I regained substantial time now that I am not checking, reading, and posting on Facebook. I will miss my friends there. I hope they join me here.

Here is another excerpt from the Psychology Today article:

"It appears that these protections weren’t taken when Alaksandr Kogan, a University of Cambridge (England) psychologist who worked for Cambridge Analytica, partnered with Facebook to provide a means of profiling users (who had to opt-in) with a personality test assessing the Five Factor Model.  This is a test that is widely used in legitimate research on everything from narcissism to psychopathology and every other personality constellation in between. There are short and long versions; this article* will lead you to some of these free versions."
