University of north Carolina Asheville Summer Activities

I just received an email from someone at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where I will be teaching this fall and next spring. The email suggested summer fitness resources and activities. The nicest part of the email was the following:

"Finally, please take the opportunity to invite a colleague for a walk around campus. Enjoy the weather, the company, and the edibles our Campus Operations folks work hard to maintain. The strawberries and serviceberries may have come and gone, but there are raspberries, blueberries, and greens ready now, with figs, more greens, and blackberries on the horizon."

Wow! A campus that plants and maintains edible fruits for its students, faculty, and staff. Nice.

Learning from my students

Here is a gem from the student interviews I conducted for my PhD dissertation research. This (amazing) student has just described an example of her exposure to experiential learning methods. She is explaining the value of experiential learning.

"I feel that it’s a more practical way to go about things, about eespecially in education because I believe that education is to train us to be, for our future workplace, yeah, so, if we were supposed to study and just do rote memorization, it’s not going to work because we will just be studying on what is actually already present instead of actively challenging and thinking about the things that we are learning.

"I feel that this type of education will prepare us more for the future because the world is always changing so, we have to always be critically thinking about things and also exploring, finding out new solutions so ... in a way this experiential learning will help us to be more prepared for the future, the changing times in the future and also to meet people from different backgrounds which is very important because yeah, we all have to adapt at some point."

Research in three stages

I have been absent from this personal blog for a while. During this spring 2019 semester I ended up teaching five business courses in three institutions. It has been a busy period, considering that I also have been conducting the research interviews for my PhD dissertation. I am completing the first stage of my research - the interviews. I start the second stage next week - the analysis. I'll overlay the third stage - the writing - with the analysis as I begin to assemble my insights from the data.

I am teaching Fundamentals of Strategic Management, the capstone course for the undergraduate business program at the State University of New York, University at Buffalo. I am teaching the same capstone course at Canisius College, as well as the capstone Strategy course for the MBA program at Canisius. And at Daemen College, I am teaching two Master's-level courses, one on global business, and the other on doing business in the Pacific Rim.

The good news for me is that I will finish my interviews for my research next week and will start the analysis of the interview data, as well as starting to write. The research has been a uniquely enjoyable process. I have learned about teaching, especially from the students whom I have interviewed. Their perspectives on learning are amazing.
