My first interaction with Google's Bard AI tool.
I am not sure if this link to the Bard page will work. You might have to be "approved" by Google, but you could try:

Khan Academy is a non-profit offering education tools at no cost. AI will change the way some educational content is delivered.

Here is Sal Khan, founder and CEO of Khan Academy, talking about the integration of GPT-4.

"Harnessing GPT-4 so that all students benefit. A nonprofit approach for equal access" March 14, 2023.

I fully support the creation of educational tools that are accessible to all . . . that have no cost. The only limitation is access to the Internet. There are millions who cannot afford college who can benefit from the merger of resources like Khan Academy with AI tools like GPT-4.

ResearchRabbit - A Potential Literature Review Tool

3/4/2023

I have found a new AI tool that might help with organizing research literature. The application is called ResearchRabbit.

I defended my dissertation in April 2022 and graduated the following June. My research was a qualitative study of students', instructors, and administrators, use of and views of experiential learning pedagogies. I did not know about Research Rabbit when I was working on this.

When I recently learned about ResearchRabbit, I put a bunch (scientific term) of literature and authors relating to experiential learning (e.g., Dewey, Kolb, Lewin, Lave, Wenger, ad nauseum) into Research Rabbit to see what it would do. You can see a screenshot of the results here.

The website is: https://www.researchrabbit.ai/

"Experimental Evidence on the Productivity Effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence" (MIT, March 2, 2023)

3/3/2023

Quantitative study: a pre-publication March 2,2023, quantitative study article on the subject of: Experimental Evidence on the Productivity Effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence.

Abstract:

We examine the productivity effects of a generative artificial intelligence technology—the assistive chatbot ChatGPT—in the context of mid-level professional writing tasks. In a preregistered online experiment, we assign occupation-specific, incentivized writing tasks to 444 college-educated professionals, and randomly expose half of them to ChatGPT.
Our results show that ChatGPT substantially raises average productivity: time taken decreases by 0.8 SDs and output quality rises by 0.4 SDs. Inequality between workers decreases, as ChatGPT compresses the productivity distribution by benefiting low-ability workers more. ChatGPT mostly substitutes for worker effort rather than complementing worker skills, and restructures tasks towards idea-generation and editing and away from rough-drafting. Exposure to ChatGPT increases job satisfaction and self-efficacy and heightens both concern and excitement about automation technologies.

Video killed the radio star . . . I checked the Clarkesworld Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/clarkesworld), and this appears to be real.

New article submissions to the SciFi magazine Clarkesworld have halted by the magazine.

The screenshot here is from Neil Clarke's blog
(http://neil-clarke.com/a-concerning-trend/). It is worthwhile reading Clarke's recent post about "A Concerning Trend".

"Commentary: I am a teacher and I let my students use ChatGPT."

From CNA, a news source located in Sinagpore. NUS is National University of Singapore.

"Commentary: I am a teacher and I let my students use ChatGPT. NUS lecturer Jonathan Sim not only allows his students to use AI tools such as ChatGPT in his classroom, he actively encourages it."

At least in Singapore, acceptance of the use of AI tools, such as
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and very soon, Baidu’s Ernie, is progressing quickly.

We may see ChatGPT, and possibly the other major OpenAI product, DALL-E 2, in Word, PowerPoint, and other MS Office applications, before the end of this semester.

This news from BGR*.
"Microsoft could reveal ChatGPT-like AI for Word, PowerPoint, Outlook in the coming weeks. Microsoft isn’t waiting at all to bring its new AI technology to all of the [sic] things."

"As reported by The Verge, the company is preparing to reveal the next generation of its productivity apps, which will be boosted by OpenAI’s technology. According to the report, Microsoft is specifically looking to demo an AI integration with Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook."

* I wanted to check the source of this news. This is what I found: "Boy Genius Report (also referred to as BGR) is a technology-influenced website and covers topics ranging from consumer gadgets, to entertainment, gaming, and science. Founded in October 2006 by anonymous web personality Boy Genius (also referred to as BG/BGR), the site was previously based on offering the public an early look at upcoming mobile phones and devices before anyone else. On April 27, 2010, BGR was acquired by Penske Media Corporation" (Wikipedia).

Educational Research and AI-Generated Writing: Confronting the Coming Tsunami (Tate et al, 2022)

Tate, T. P., Doroudi, S., Ritchie, D., Xu, Y., & uci, m. w. (2023, January 10). Educational Research and AI-Generated Writing: Confronting the Coming Tsunami. https://doi.org/10.35542/osf.io/4mec3

Abstract: The public release and surprising capacity of ChatGPT has brought AI-enabled text generation into the forefront for educators and academics. ChatGPT and similar text generation tools raise numerous questions for educational practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. We begin by first describing what large language models are and how they function, and then situate them in the history of technology’s complex interrelationship with literacy, cognition, and education. Finally, we discuss implications for the field.
