Ethan Mollick is a Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has become a thought leader on the impact of AI, especialy chatbots, on education. This article shares useful and thoughtful perspectives that affect all of us as educators.

"But the impact of AI goes beyond just writing. I believe it's inevitable that AI will transform classrooms. It obviously takes on some of the role of instructors, acting as a fantastic tutor and explainer of concepts (as one student told me, "Why raise your hand in class when you can ask ChatGPT a question?"). But by doing this, AI also has the potential to benefit teachers, students, and education as a whole. To understand why, it's important to see why traditional teaching methods, like lectures, aren't that effective, and why their alternatives haven't taken off as quickly as some educators would like."

The relationship between academic dishonesty and unethical business practices (Sims, 1993)

As educators, we may need to spend more time teaching ethics. This is true regardless of the primary subjects that we teach.

The advent of the powerful new AI chatbots, such as GPT-4 in Microsoft Bing and Bard in Google search, presents our students with important writing tools. These tools can help students to improve their writing skills and to generate new ideas. However, they also present students with virtually infinite, and almost undetectable, opportunities to cheat.

I teach upper-level Bachelor's and Master's business courses. To my course content, I have added instruction on:
- How to use Bing and Bard effectively,
- What to watch for when Bing and Bard hallucinate,
- When it is appropriate to use these tools.
- What constitutes unethical use of the tools.

This addition to course content for every course involves time that would otherwise have been spent on other topics or experiential learning activities. I suspect that instructors whose students conduct online research or write papers and essays has found the need to make these changes to their courses. Teaching how to use Bing and Bard should be straightforward. However, teaching the ethical use of the tools may be the most challenging task. For most of us, our courses will never be the same.

Following is one study that addresses the correlation between academic integrity and career behavior.

Sims, R. L. (1993). The relationship between academic dishonesty and unethical business practices. Journal of Education for Business, 68(4), 207-211.

Abstract: This article investigates whether the range and severity of academic dishonesty engaged in during undergraduate studies is related to the range and severity of dishonesty engaged in later during employment. Self-reported data was collected from 60 MBA students. Findings indicate that subjects who admitted to having engaged in a wide range of academic dishonesty also admitted to a wide range of work-related dishonesty. Additionally, those subjects who engaged in behaviors considered severely dishonest in college also engaged in behaviors considered severely dishonest at work.

Now that the excitement about AI chatbots and image generators in higher education is subsiding (a little), I expect we will see increasing thoughtful speculation about how these tools will affect the employment of our graduates. When you do the foodie tour: Japan to Singapore to Thailand, with maybe a stopove in Hong Kong, if it is in the fall, get in touch. I should be in Singapore teaching then. We can eat well while discussing higher education in Singapore. Meanwhile, Yum!

CNBC TRAVEL: Asia’s ‘best restaurants’ list is out — and it’s no surprise which country made the list 17 times

Japan is the top destination in Asia for gastronomes this year, according to new rankings released by the 50 Best organization.

The country is home to 17 of the region’s “best” 100 restaurants, which were released in two parts in March.

Singapore and Thailand tied for second place, with 15 restaurants on the list each. Hong Kong — last year’s top destination — saw 13 establishments on the list.

Output: Bing generated 9,200 words or so of text and a couple images, GPT-4 generated a working HTML and CSS file, MidJourney created 12 images, ElevenLabs created a voicefile, and DiD created a movie.
Input: I made less than 20 inputs to all the systems to generate these results.
Content: I “created” a market positioning document, an email campaign, a website, a logo, a hero image, a script and animated video, social campaigns for 5 platforms, and some other odds-and-ends besides.

I admit I am getting tired of the drip, drip, drip, of news about AI this semester. Here is another piece of news from The New York Times today.

"The internet giant will grant users access to a chatbot after years of cautious development, chasing splashy debuts from rivals OpenAI and Microsoft."

"For more than three months, Google executives have watched as projects at Microsoft and a San Francisco start-up called OpenAI have stoked the public’s imagination with the potential for artificial intelligence.

"But on Tuesday, Google tentatively stepped off the sidelines as it released a chatbot called Bard. The new A.I. chatbot will be available to a limited number of users in the United States and Britain and will accommodate additional users, countries and languages over time, Google executives said in an interview."
