This will be a two-week visit to Singapore. Students will have free time during the weekends and evenings, and on several weekdays, to explore Singapore. We will stay at the 3-Star YMCA @ One Orchard Hotel in central Singapore. We will focus on understanding cultural differences and appreciating the value of diversity in businesses, non-profit service organizations, and in life. Our academic emphasis will be on social entrepreneurship. We also will learn about for-profit entrepreneurship. We will conduct classroom discussions each week. We will visit businesses and cultural institutions during most weekday afternoons. A typical day will include morning classroom discussions and afternoon visits. Many of our visits will to be social entrepreneurship (i.e., non-profit or non-governmental) organizations. About half of our visits will be to cultural institutions such as museums, music venues, schools, and parks. During our discussions, we will reflect on our visits. We will use a three-week adaptation of an existing University at Buffalo (UB) syllabus. This will be a three-credit undergraduate course - MGO 330 Entrepreneurship and Small Business - based on experiential learning methods[1]. The expected student levels are sophomore through senior. Students from any major program at UB may take this course as an elective. [1] Kolb, D. A. (2015). Experiential learning: experience as the source of learning and development (Second ed.). Or students can cross the street to the Singapore Management University School of Economics and dine very economically at the Kuofu Food Court - an air-conditioned hawker centre. |
